“Prof. D-r. Assen Zlatarov” University is a state university founded on 6th October 1963. Tuition is carried out in three faculties - Faculty of technical sciences, Faculty of natural sciences and Faculty of social sciences. It includes three colleges – technical college, Medical College and College of Tourism. Tuition is carried out in 29 accredited Bachelor and over 60 Master programs.
For the past six decades, the University has established as one of Bulgaria’s leading academic institutions.
“Prof. D-r. Assen Zlatarov” University offers to its students 18 professional qualifications, 48 subjects to obtain "Professional Bachelor", “Bachelor”, “Master” or PhD degrees.
Prof. Dr Assen Zlatarov University has a modern material base and facilities which comply with the state requirements for a high quality of education. It consists of six academic buildings with 150 lecture halls and 70 laboratories, sports facilities, three student hostels and a medical service centre.
More than 405 highly qualified lecturers, 320 of them habilitated, teach at the university. Organization and management of the educational process at the university comply with the European requirements and criteria for qualitative educational and research process. The University has been rated among the first in Bulgaria according to the quality of the research on Hirsch system for scientific contribution.
“Prof. D-r. Assen Zlatarov” University is the leading scientific organization in Southeastern Bulgaria and among the first in the country as regards the funded research. Each year the invested amounts in the research sector are around 1.27 million euro, 90% of which are under contracts with international organizations. These numbers rank “Prof. D-r. Assen Zlatarov” University at the first places in Bulgaria as regards the funded research.
In the University are established several research laboratories, including Laboratory of Mathematical Chemistry (a leading world laboratory), Central scientific research laboratory, Complex laboratory for analysis of petroleum products and solid fuels, Scientific laboratory named "Buluritest“, Laboratory for testing of silicate materials, Laboratory for rubber products etc.
The university has established active scientific relations with institutes and universities in more than 80 countries including England, France, Germany, Russia, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Serbia, Poland, Slovenia, United Arab Emirates etc. They give the opportunity for scientific specializations and study practice of the academic staff and students, for exchange of lecturers, academic and scientific literature.

The newly created infrastructure is distributed among the consortium partners. It consists of 4 bases with 15 laboratories built and equipped in them. The research activities in the laboratories are grouped in 6 work packages: WP 1 Innovative solutions in robotics and automation, WP2 Biomechatronic systems, WP3 Intelligent environments, processes and technologies in mechatronics, WP4 New methods and means for control and testing of mechatronic elements, WP5 Mathematical provision and modelling of complex systems and processes, WP6 3D modelling, development and introduction of pilot models of elements, details and systems for mechatronics.

The project envisages the establishment of the Research Centers in Burgas and Edirne, within which the following will be equipped and function: Laboratory for analysis of water pollution with plastic, Laboratory for analysis and modelling of aquatic ecosystems, Laboratory of aquaculture and biotechnology.
The centers will play the role of scientific infrastructure for collaboration of scientists, researchers, local and regional institutions in the development of common approaches, methodologies, models and initiatives for sustainable use and management of the natural resources. The research activities of the centers are combined with their educational function in terms of involving students in research tasks and projects, conducting information campaigns and working with local communities to form environmentally responsible behavior.

The project is focused on building an effectively functioning infrastructure on modular principles in the field of 1/ Control, purification, water management; 2/ Treatment, recycling, recovery and disposal of solid waste; 3/ Realization of energy and resource efficient economy by obtaining renewable and alternative sources of energy, materials and resources; 4/ Stimulating the innovations in the technologies for sustainable environment and circular economy 5/ Development and realization of the entrepreneurship of the young specialists in the above directions.
Center for Competence will conduct cutting-edge research into the creation of products, services and clean technologies with high resource and energy efficiency and significant economic, social and environmental added value.
